How to stay motivated when you first go vegan

Understand what is making you unmotivated

Do you feel like vegan food is gross or boring? Are your friends making fun of you? Does it take too much time to cook a meal? Do you miss the taste of animal products?

Whatever it is that’s making you consider going back to your old habits, trust me there is a solution. Cut yourself some slack. Being vegan is completely different from what you’ve known all your life so it will take time to adjust and find your groove. Just stick with it.

Remind yourself why you went vegan

You went vegan for a reason. What is it? Never forget it. Your reason is something you felt so strongly about that you were willing to change your entire lifestyle.

Write it down if you need to, and post it on your fridge as a reminder of why you choose not to eat animals. Every meal is a new choice.

Think about the long term effects

Rather than just thinking about the here and now, remind yourself how many animals’ lives you’ll save, how far your cholesterol will drop, how much water you’ll conserve eating vegan.

Then on the flip side, think about how much harm you would support by eating animals, how much worse your acne would be, how many years your life would be shortened.

Remember where you came from

Not only is it important to look to the future, it can also be motivating to celebrate the success you’ve had so far.

Use this vegan calculator to see how many animals, gallons of water, and more that you’ve already saved in the time being vegan. Also, think back on your health. How has your digestion, skin, weight, etc. improved on your vegan diet?

Try new recipes

If you’re feeling vegan food is boring, get on Pinterest or Google and discover new recipes. Challenge yourself to step outside your comfort zone using an ingredient you’ve never tried before.

Missing your old favorite recipes? Just search it with the word “vegan” and I guarantee you’ll find a vegan replacement.

Find your passion

Nothing’s going to motivate you like passion. Chances are, your passion will tie in with why you went vegan. Maybe you’re passionate about health, or fitness, or zero waste, or speaking up for the animals.

Whatever it is, educate yourself. Absorb every.single.piece of information available on the topic. Knowledge is a tool for enlightenment. Once you know something, you can’t un-know it and you won’t be able to turn back.

Find community

The vegan community is growing rapidly. And it’s filled with people who want to support each other on their vegan journey. It doesn’t matter if it’s online or in person, find someone to connect with.

You may also be able to find a friend who wants to go vegan with you. You guys will be able to support and encourage each other and give each other a kick in the pants when you’re feeling unmotivated.

Keep exploring different ways to be vegan. Eventually, you will find what works for your lifestyle and it will become second nature. You’ll feel as though you’ve been living this way your entire life.
