Comedian Jon Stewart and his wife Tracey treated the hosts of The View to vegan cake to prove vegan baked goods can be delicious.
The sweet surprise was instigated after a recent show on which actor Craig Robinson, who played Darryl Philbin on The Office, said he was looking for a good vegan cake for his birthday.
Co-host Paula Faris told him he should “splurge” on a non-vegan cake, insinuating vegan baked goods weren’t tasty. Piling on to that, co-host Sunny Hostin cynically asked Robinson, “But how good is a vegan cake going to be?”
As outspoken animal rights activists, the Stewarts jumped at the chance to prove that vegan cakes can taste just as good, if not better, than their non-vegan counterparts by sending a variety of vegan desserts from Pennsylvania-based bakery Vegan Treats.
Before taking her first bite, Hostin said, “Has anybody ever had a kale cake that’s delicious? No!” Before she could even swallow her first bite, she admitted, “I was wrong.”
After co-host Whoopi Goldberg asked where the idea of a kale birthday cake came into play, Hostin said, “I was talking without any factual basis.”
The Stewarts own the newest branch of rescue organization Farm Sanctuary in New Jersey.
