23 Tips for a Happy, Healthy Life

  1. Get a great night’s sleep. Whether that means turning off technology a couple hours before bedtime, taking a hot bath, or even getting a new bed, do it. Good sleep is critical not only for productivity but also for allowing your body the time it needs to restore itself.
  2. Don’t skip the most important meal of the day. Having a clean, healthy breakfast will give you the energy you need to get your day started. Try a smoothie or oatmeal!
  3. Step away from your desk at least once every hour while working or studying. Take a quick walk around the office or have a light stretch a few minutes every hour.

  4. Find a form of exercise you enjoy so it’s not a chore. If you make exercise less work and more fun, you’re more likely to want to stick with it! Try hiking, yoga, biking, karate, belly dancing, anything!
  5. Have sex. You’ll burn calories and possibly help to lower your blood pressure, improve your sleep, boost your immunity, and protect your heart.
  6. Laugh often. Laughing, and even just smiling, has the power to instantly put you in a good mood.
  7. Find positive ways to cope with stress. Try meditation, yoga, listen to soothing music, go for a walk, or any other activity that calms your mind.
  8. Practice gratitude. Find at least one thing every day to be grateful for, no matter how big or small. Looking for things to be grateful for will show you how much you actually have to be grateful for.
  9. Spend time in nature. There’s something about being in nature that calms and re-grounds you. Get out there and breathe in some fresh air.
  10. Do something nice for others. Living a happy life isn’t all about you. Putting a smile on someone else’s face will boost your happiness too!
  11. Challenge your mind. Find activities you enjoy that force your brain to work. You’ll feel great when you accomplish your task and your brain will get a workout at the same time!
  12. Live right now. Don’t long for Friday or dread Monday. The present moment is all you’re guaranteed so enjoy it, no matter what day of the week it is.
  13. Keep track of your goals and set new ones. Set goals for work, fitness, relationships, personal growth, etc. and share them with someone who can keep you accountable.
  14. Purge negative people from your life. Those people who are negative, critical, and manipulative. Get them all out of your life and surround yourself with positive, uplifting people who you can learn and grow from, and vice versa.
  15. Do more of what you love. Do something that you really enjoy, every day. Cooking, volunteering, listening to your favorite album. No matter how big or small, do something that will make your heart smile.
  16. Hydrate. Water is essential for your body to function. Not only will you feel a difference being fully hydrated, you’ll also see a difference in your skin! Shoot for at least 2 liters a day.
  17. Embrace your personality. If you like to surround yourself with people and have a full calendar, go for it. If you prefer to be at home on a Saturday night with a book in your hand, do it. Stay true to who you are rather than doing what you think you should. Be ok with saying “no” to things you don’t feel like doing.
  18. Practice positive thinking. Your attitude can make the biggest difference, especially when you’re in a particularly unpleasant situation.
  19. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Shift your perspective by asking yourself, “Is what I’m arguing about or stressing over going to matter a year from now?”
  20. Stop procrastinating. If something needs to be done, do it now. Don’t leave the dishes in the sink to be done in the morning. You’ll be happy you took 5 minutes to knock them out.
  21. Take a tech-time-out once in a while. Turn off your phone, TV, and computer and pick up a book or try meditating.
  22. Dream big. Never tell yourself that something you want is too far out of reach. If you want it bad enough, you can make it happen.
  23. Love yourself. Practice self-care. Love every single thing about yourself. Speak positive and uplifting words to yourself. Process unhappy thoughts, learn and grow from them, then let them go.

      1. Hard to narrow down to one, much less five, but being in nature, living in the now, purging negativity, and being who you are with gusto is how I live most days. Sleep and separating oneself routinely from gadgetry are both crucial as well. So far so good!
